Design Features

Miakka’s unique look is inspired by fabled Australian sand-belt style treasures Royal Melbourne and Kingston Heath. That means wide fairways with minimal rough, fairways and greens mowed right to the bunker edges which are vertical-edged and cast dramatic, dark shadows.

It also means waste bunkers flowing along the edges of the golf holes, filled with a menagerie of native plant material adding texture, color to the overall landscape.

Turf

Miakka is one of the first in Florida to use cutting edge zoysia grasses on tees, fairways and even the greens. The profile of Stadium Zoysia allows the ball to sit up for cleaner strikes, making it perfect for tees and fairways. The blades on Lazer Zoysia are short and sturdy, allowing for consistent true rolls on greens and chipping areas.

Over 88 miles of drainage underneath sand-capped tees, fairways and approaches means the course will always play firm and fast.

Sustainability

Our goal when building the golf course was to have this land be more environmentally sound than when we found it. Over 90% of the watershed is filtered before it goes back to the river’s aquifer. Numerous wetlands have been improved, removing invasive plants and replacing them with native species. Hundreds of large oaks have been relocated on the property rather than being cut down. Millions of other native grasses, shrubs, palmettos, palms and trees have been brought into the now refurbished landscape.

Additionally, the cutting-edge zoysia grass requires around half the water, fertilizer, pesticides and mowing that other traditional golf course turf does. In addition to the golf landscape, 300 acres of nature trails are preserved and earmarked for conservation easement.
